How AI is redefining athlete performance and injury prevention

Artificial Intelligence is no longer confined to factories, hospitals, or financial trading floors: it has firmly entered the world of professional sport. Across major football leagues such as Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League, wearable sensors, GPS vests, and computer vision systems are quietly transforming how clubs train athletes, manage their workload, and protect them from injury. What was once decided by intuition and experience is increasingly guided by real-time data, and this shift is creating an entirely new professional landscape around sport.

The most visible sign of this change is the black vest many players now wear during training and matches. Hidden inside are GPS units and inertial sensors that record distance covered, sprint speed, acceleration, and deceleration hundreds of times per second, alongside heart rate and impact data that reveal how much stress a session places on the body. During a typical week, a single player generates thousands of data points, which are fed into AI-powered dashboards capable of learning what “normal” looks like for each individual and each playing position. When a reading deviates from that baseline, the system can flag early signs of fatigue or overload long before they turn into a muscle strain or a torn ligament.

Computer vision adds a further layer of insight. Video-analysis platforms can now automatically track every player’s movement across a match, assess running technique, and detect subtle biomechanical patterns, such as an irregular stride or an asymmetric landing, that are difficult for the human eye to catch consistently. Combined with wearable data, these tools allow medical and performance staff to move from a reactive approach, where an injury is treated only after it happens, to a predictive one, where risk is identified and managed in advance. Recent studies on professional clubs using this kind of technology have reported meaningful reductions in soft-tissue injuries and shorter recovery times, alongside more consistent training loads throughout the season.

This transformation is not only technological; it is also reshaping the labour market around sport. Clubs no longer rely solely on coaches and physiotherapists: they increasingly employ sport data analysts, performance analysts, and biomechanics specialists whose job is to interpret sensor and video data and translate it into concrete decisions for coaching staff. These roles sit at the intersection of sport science, statistics, and digital literacy, and they did not exist in their current form a decade ago. Employers in this field typically look for a mix of technical skills, such as data handling, basic programming, and familiarity with tracking software, combined with the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to coaches and athletes who may have no technical background at all.

For vocational education and training systems, this evolution represents both an opportunity and a challenge. On the one hand, it opens genuinely new career paths for young people who combine a passion for sport with an interest in data and technology, from performance analysis in professional clubs to sports-technology companies and youth academies now adopting the same tools at a smaller scale. On the other hand, it requires training providers to update their curricula quickly, integrating basic data analysis, sports science, and digital tools into programmes that have traditionally focused on coaching or physical education alone. Without this update, a widening gap could emerge between well-resourced clubs able to invest in cutting-edge technology and its specialists, and smaller organisations left behind.

Ultimately, AI in sport tells a familiar story: technology does not replace the people at the heart of the game, but it does redefine the skills needed to support them. As wearables and computer vision become standard tools in professional and amateur sport alike, preparing the next generation of analysts, coaches, and support staff to work confidently with these technologies will be essential to ensure that the benefits of safer, better-managed athletes reach every level of sport, not just the wealthiest clubs.
