How do you turn real-world industry knowledge into an online course that actually works for learners – through a cross-sector cooperation and then you get seven practical Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) for IVET and CVET, as demonstrated under the AI4VET4AI project. This was at the core of a recent webinar on possibilities in artificial intelligence upskilling, bringing together speakers from business and higher education to explore the evolving role of MOOCs.
From an industry perspective, developing a MOOC is not just about sharing expertise, it is about structuring it. Complex, experience-based knowledge needs to be broken down into modules, learning units, and clear storylines that guide learners step by step. Biggest challenge lies in translating real-world practice into content that is both structured and easy to follow, without losing its depth or relevance.
This is where cooperation with educational institutions becomes essential. Academic partners help reshape and simplify industry input, ensuring that courses remain accessible while still grounded in solid methodology. Result is a balance between practical insight and pedagogical clarity.
One of the key strengths of MOOCs is their ability to connect theory with practice. Real-life examples, case studies, and data-driven scenarios make learning more tangible, helping learners move from abstract concepts to practical understanding. At the same time, this format opens access to a wide range of learners, from students to professionals, supporting flexible, self-paced learning across different stages of their careers.
However, the format is not without its challenges. Engagement and completion remain ongoing concerns, as MOOCs rely heavily on individual motivation. Content also needs to be continuously updated to stay relevant, particularly in fast-changing fields.
For these reasons, MOOCs are increasingly seen not as a replacement for traditional teaching, but as part of a broader, blended approach. When combined with mentoring, project-based learning, and real-world application, they offer a powerful way to support upskilling, reskilling, and lifelong learning.
Ultimately, the discussion highlighted a simple but important point: education and industry need each other. MOOCs, when developed together, can bridge that gap – bringing structure to experience and practical relevance to learning.
